The Catholic organization, Knights of Columbus, announced on Thursday a nationwide blood drive for Congressman Steve Scalise (R-La.) after he sustained severe blood loss from gunshot injuries on Wednesday.
In a press release, the Knights in Marquette, Louisiana, said concerned citizens should contact the nearest blood center or hospital and say the donation is a “Replenishment for Representative Steve Scalise.”
“Please help us turn this tragedy into a positive public statement of charity, humanity, and unity. Your selfless acts of kindness will both honor Steve Scalise and his family, as well as refresh the critically short supply of blood reserves," the statement read.
MedStar hospital in Washington, D.C., announced on Wednesday that Scalise received “multiple” blood transfusions and had multiple fractured bones. He was still in critical condition and needed additional surgery when that announcement was released.
A gunman opened fire on Scalise and his Republican colleagues while they attended a practice for the Congressional Baseball Game held on Thursday.
