In the early hours Wednesday morning, a gunman shot and killed New York City Police Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, while she was sitting in her patrol car with her partner.

NYPD officials are calling this a “clear assassination,” according to the Associated Press.

The attacker, who has been identified as Alexander Bonds, 34, was shot and killed by police officers while attempting to flee the scene.

The AP reports that the attack happened in Bronx, NY just after 12:30 a.m. and that Familia's partner radioed for assistance.

New York City Police Sgt. Brendan Ryan says at this time, police do not know of any connection between Familia and Bonds.
