Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has become the unsuspecting inspiration for a new viral video.
During a July 27 House Financial Services Committee hearing, Waters asked Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin about a letter she had sent regarding President Donald Trump's financial ties to Russia. Mnuchin's agency had not responded at that point.
After her initial question, Mnuchin began his response by lauding Waters for her work in California — where he owns a 21,000-square-foot home. The representative from California interrupted him, however. “Reclaiming my time,” she said, thrice, before having her time handed back to her.
“Let me just say to you 'thank you' for the compliments, but I don't want to waste my time on me,” Waters said, before reminding Mnuchin of the House procedural rules in which a representative can ask for their time back.
The original moment went viral in and of itself, with Twitter, especially, being set on fire:
Just three days later, however, Mykal Kilgore was so inspired by Waters's confrontation with Mnuchin that he set her now-infamous catchphrase to music.
Kilgore describes his ode to Waters as such: “Our beloved 'Auntie' Maxine Waters laid this sermon down so good that I had to sing about it! Whenever anybody tries to distract me or block me (even with praise or platitudes) I'm gonna have to let them know that I'm #ReclaimingMyTime”
Adam Joseph, a singer-songwriter and producer, also created music out of Mnuchin and Waters's interaction, though his version is more club-friendly.
Waters, for her part, said “I can't believe it. I cannot believe it that we went viral.”
