Chuck Todd, NBC's political director, said on Friday that he would not comply with a hypothetical U.S. Department of Justice subpoena targeted at investigating leaks to the media:

“I look forward to ignoring that subpoena,” Todd said.

He was responding to Attorney General Jeff Sessions indication that the Justice Department might later subpoena media outlets after they published leaked information.

Criticizing Sessions's approach to squashing leaks, Todd argued that threats were impractical:

On Friday, Sessions held a press conference detailing how he would crack down on government leakers. That appearance, Todd seemed to say, “unleashed” criticism of the press.

Sessions noted that he respected the role of the media but warned they shouldn't put lives at risk.

“They cannot place lives at risk. We must balance the press's role with protecting our national security with the lives of those who serve in the intelligence community, the armed forces, and all law-abiding Americans," he said.
