The White House just released a statement saying that President Donald Trump has pardoned former Maricopa County, Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The sheriff was an early supporter of Trump because of their agreement on immigration policy.
Arpaio served 24 years in office before he was tossed out by voters. Arpaio was facing up to six months in prison for not following court orders, which told him he could no longer detain people for the sole reason that he was suspicious that they were in the country illegally.
During Trump’s Phoenix rally, he asked the audience if they liked Arpaio, and they cheered in unison. Trump then stated, “He should have had a jury, but I'll make a prediction: I think he's going to be just fine.”
