White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended President Donald Trump's controversial decision on Tuesday to end the Obama-era Differed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, specifically calling out House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) “heartless” response to the administration's latest move.
During Tuesday's White House press briefing, NBC News reporter Kristen Welker asked Sanders how the president, who once said he would “treat Dreamers with 'great heart,'” is “treating them with great heart.”
“By allowing an orderly process to take place,” Sanders said in response.
The press secretary then used Welker's question as an opportunity to respond to Pelosi's critical comments from earlier Tuesday, which called the administration's move to end DACA a “cruel act of political cowardice.”
“There's a lot of people that I have seen attacking the president for not showing the level of compassion that they feel like he should,” Sanders said. “The most heartless thing that I have seen all day today is that Democrats like Nancy Pelosi are using this decision today for fundraising, while the president's trying to fix the situation.”
Sanders also said that Democratic lawmakers in opposition to the move are “politicizing an issue instead of actually doing their job.”
“If they would spend less time fundraising and more time focusing on solutions, we wouldn't even be in this problem in the first place,” Sanders said.
Pelosi on Tuesday condemned Trump's decision to end the Obama-era program, which deferred deportation for undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.
“President Trump's decision to end DACA should break the hearts and offend the morals of all who believe in justice and human dignity. This cruel act of political cowardice deals a stunning blow to the bright young DREAMers and to everyone who cherishes the American Dream,” Pelosi said in a statement.
“Congress must move immediately to protect these courageous, patriotic DREAMers. House Republicans must join Democrats to pass legislation to safeguard our young DREAMers from the senseless cruelty of deportation and shield families from separation and heartbreak.”
