While speaking at a rally in Alabama on Friday, President Donald Trump told people to leave stadiums when NFL players kneel during the national anthem.
Players who do that, Trump suggested, were hurting the NFL. “The only thing you could do better is if you see it — even if it's one player — leave the stadium. I guarantee things will stop,” Trump said.
Trump also wondered how great it would be if an NFL owner told a player disrespecting the flag that they were fired. “Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say 'Get that son of a b***h off the field ... he's fired!'” Trump asked the crowd, which responded with chants of “USA! USA!”
Any owner who did that, Trump said, would be the “most popular person in this country.”
Trump acknowledged that NFL players had freedoms like that of speech, but he complained that even with those freedoms, disrespecting the flag was still wrong. “That's a total disrespect of our heritage. That's a total disrespect of everything that we stand for, OK?”
