Karl Rove, a former senior adviser to President George W. Bush, ripped into President Donald Trump on Sunday for wasting his platform and his time attacking NFL players protesting by kneeling during the national anthem.

“The president has two very valuable assets: his time and his voice. This president wastes it when he engages with things like this,” Rove said Sunday during a Fox News panel discussion on Trump's recent controversial attacks of NFL players who protest for civil rights by taking a knee during the national anthem.

Rove added that the president often spends time he ought to be using to tackle major issues like health care and immigration on less important topics such as “whether Meryl Streep is a good actress or not — and now he's joined this fight, much to his own disadvantage.”

“He's in the middle of two big fights and this distracts from it,” Rove added.

The Republican adviser then criticized the president for “standing up and swearing at them,” and suggested instead he should have said: “I understand that you have a right to do this, but we stand and respect our flag, not because of America's imperfections, but because we're constantly as a nation aspiring to the approval of history.”

“He could have come away the winner, but he is walking away from this a loser in the minds of the American people,” the former top Bush aide said.

Rove also pointed to a tweet from Trump slamming former President Barack Obama for calling for the Washington Redskins to change their name, which some are saying shows a double standard.

“He was against the federal government and against the government interfering in telling the Washington Redskins what their name ought to be. Now he is saying 'fire those people' if they do not stand and respect the flag. He ought to be an aspirational figure.”

The president ignited a firestorm on Friday night when he called for NFL players who protest by kneeling during the national anthem to be fired: “Get that son of a b***h off the field ... he's fired!”
