President Donald Trump doubled down on his attacks aimed at NBC News on Wednesday for reporting that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson both considered resigning over the summer and called the president a “moron.”
Trump told reporters he had full confidence in Tillerson after meeting with victims of the Las Vegas shooting at the city's University Medical Center, alleging that the news network “made up” the bombshell story that painted the secretary as fed up with the administration.
“I'm very honored by his comments,” Trump said of Tillerson's statement earlier in the day, denouncing that he considered leaving his post. However, he did not outright refute calling the president a “moron,” instead pivoting to say: “I'm not going to deal with petty stuff like that.”
“It was fake news. It was a totally phony story,” Trump added. “It was made up. It was made up by NBC. They just made it up.”
However, NBC News is standing by its report: “We've extensively reported on this. We talked to a dozen people for this story.”
And while Tillerson publicly denied ever wanting to leave the administration, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) added fuel to the fire by saying on Wednesday that the secretary of state is in “a terribly frustrating place” by not “being supported” the way he ought to be.
