On Friday, President Donald Trump responded angrily to the announcement that Bowe Bergdahl, the former Army sergeant who pleaded guilty to desertion and “misbehavior before the enemy,” would not be sentenced to serve any prison time.

Trump tweeted:

But just hours later, as he embarked on his first trip to Asia as president, he and First Lady Melania Trump made a very meaningful stop in Hawaii to pay their respects to the fallen and to those still serving honorably in Pearl Harbor:

The president, along with the first lady and White House chief of staff John Kelly, were greeted with flowers and cheers before Trump was briefed by the Pacific Command:

And then, he went immediately to Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial:

The president and first lady visited the memorial, only accessible by water taxi, and they laid a wreath below the wall where the names of the fallen are etched in stone.
