President Donald Trump will make his first visit to Utah since taking office on Monday and is set to deliver a speech at the state capitol.
According to reports, Trump plans to announce that his administration will scale back two large national monuments in the Beehive State, which critics have condemned as a “massive federal land grab” by the government.
Trump will call for an “85 percent cut to Utah's 1.3 million acre Bears Ears National Monument,” which was set up by former President Barack Obama. He will also introduce a 50 percent cut to the state's “1.9 million acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.”
Mike Noel, a state representative from Kane County, said reducing the size of the monuments “would help free up a lot of land that has been under oppression.”
"We will be fighting back immediately. All five tribes will be standing together united to defend Bears Ears,” attorney for the Native American Rights Fund Natalie Landreth said in response to the admiration's coming move.
The president is scheduled to speak at 2:40 p.m. EST. Watch the event live below, via the White Hosue.
