First lady Melania Trump is going on three weeks without having been seen in public following her kidney surgery earlier this month — people are starting to get worried, and conspiracy theories are running wild.
Rather than recovering in the privacy of the White House, according to Politico, theories surrounding the first lady's whereabouts have been swirling and include claims that:
- she has left the White House and moved back to New York City
- she's currently cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller
- she's working on a “tell-all book about her husband” with the Obamas
- she actually has plastic surgery and needs more time to heal
The rumors come after Mrs. Trump underwent a routine embolization procedure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center “to treat a benign kidney condition” and remained in the hospital for five days following a surgery that is typically completed in one.
The White House announced her release, but has since given little information on her recovery. Her spokesperson declined to comment on where she's been since welcoming three American hostages home from North Korea with her husband, but addressed the theories.
“Sadly, we deal with conspiracy theories all the time, so this is nothing new, just more silly nonsense,” Stephanie Grisham said. “She is doing great. I wouldn’t characterize it as a long absence. She was hospitalized for almost a week and is now home and recovering.”
It appears the “intensely private” first lady may truly be simply resting up. Regardless, Americans are growing concerned:
