Actress Patricia Heaton is urging people she describes as “her friends on the left” to dial back the intensity of today’s political language after a frightening incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

The event, held Saturday at the Washington Hilton, was abruptly disrupted when gunfire broke out near the ballroom. President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, first lady Melania Trump, and other high-ranking officials were quickly evacuated as Secret Service agents responded to the situation. According to reports, a gunman exchanged fire with agents in the hotel lobby before being subdued and taken into custody.

Inside the ballroom, the mood shifted instantly from celebratory to chaotic. Attendees ducked under tables or scrambled for cover as the sound of shots spread panic through the room. The dinner was ultimately postponed.

The following day, Heaton shared her reaction on X. She reflected on past elections, noting that while she had been unhappy with Democratic victories under Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, she never resorted to extreme rhetoric or wished harm on political leaders.

“I wasn’t happy when Clinton, Obama or Biden won,” she wrote, “but I didn’t call them fascist or a threat to democracy. I didn’t hope someone would assassinate them. I went on with my life with gratitude.” She encouraged others to take a similar approach, suggesting that stepping back from heated language would benefit both individuals and the country as a whole.

Law enforcement officials later confirmed that the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, had allegedly intended to target Trump administration officials. Investigators say he had written a manifesto outlining his plans and had posted anti-Trump and anti-Christian messages online.

During the incident, Allen reportedly rushed a Secret Service checkpoint while armed and opened fire, striking an agent’s ballistic vest. Agents returned fire and apprehended him at the scene.

Both Allen and the injured agent were taken to a hospital. The agent has since been released and is expected to recover fully.

Authorities also revealed that Allen’s brother had contacted police in Connecticut before the shooting, warning them about a manifesto his sibling had sent to family members. His sister told investigators that he had grown increasingly extreme in his views and had talked about taking action to address what he saw as major problems in the world.

For Heaton, the incident fits into a broader concern about political discourse. She has spoken out before about what she sees as dangerous rhetoric, including after the 2025 killing of Charlie Kirk, when she criticized people who mocked or celebrated the death online. She has also taken aim at political commentators, accusing some of stoking fear and dismissing voters with different views.
