Sports fans can face enough heartbreak on the field with their favorite team, but some franchises have added to it by getting mixed-up in off-field stuff that takes aim at their fans.

While many have focused on which teams have elected to celebrate Pride Month, a few other teams decided Friday to place our Second Amendment rights in their crosshairs by going along with Everytown’s “National Gun Violence Awareness Day,” which encouraged people to wear orange. The Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Eagles were among the teams to take part in this campaign.

Today is Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Now, both the White Sox and Eagles have broke their fans’ hearts in recent years. For the Eagles, it was getting bounced on their homefield from the playoffs last season, while the White Sox lost 100 games (or more) for the past three seasons.

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. #WearOrange today and this weekend to honor the lives of people in the United States affected by gun violence.

Should sports teams avoid gun control activism?

Now both have slapped a decent-sized portion of their fanbase in the face by appeasing a gun-control group in an event intended to boost support for anti-Second Amendment legislation. Sadly, they are not the only ones.

In a Friday release, Everytown boasted that several teams elected to participate in the campaign this year, but they don’t quite tell the whole story. It turns out that they gathered together teams from every major professional sports league – we’re talking not just baseball and football, there’s the NBA, WNBA, NHL and soccer leagues (men’s and women’s).

“Wear Orange is teaming up with the professional sports community once again, with expected support from teams representing every major professional league and dozens of individual athletes,” Everytown wrote in an announcement.

These teams should stick to what they do best: playing sports. Leave the politics at the ticketing gates.
