Abducted ‘Supermom’ Finally Reveals How She Escaped—And Barely Made it Out Alive

This past Thanksgiving, California mother Sherri Papini was found along the side of a road. She was beaten, branded, and worn down both mentally and physically.

She was also 150 miles from home.

Sherri had been missing for three weeks after she was abducted by two armed Hispanic women while out for a jog in her hometown of Redding.

According to Sherri’s husband, Keith, his wife went missing on November 2nd. He came home from work that day and realized she was not only missing, but had yet to pick up their two children — something she’d never forget.

While the family never gave up hope in their search for Sherri, their chances of finding her alive seemed slimmer as each day passed.

However, a miracle occurred on that fateful Thanksgiving morning, when Sherri was freed by her captors and managed to get picked up by a helpful motorist.

While little was known about her abduction, it was recently revealed that Sherri went through unimaginable pain and suffering while captive.

According to her husband, Sherri underwent severe physical trauma. He told “Good Morning America”:

“Her now emaciated body of 87 pounds was covered in multicolored bruises, severe burns, red rashes and chain markings.”

Her nose had been broken and her hair was cut off:

“Obviously, a very sick person who may have wanted to not only to cut it off to change her physical appearance, but also as to humiliate them, wear her down.”

While it’s clear that Sherri was in a living nightmare while detained by her captors, new information shows that, even after getting away, Sherri almost never made it out alive.

According to Keith, who spoke with ABC News’s “20/20,” no one would stop to help the 34-year-old mother — even though she was screaming so loudly for help that blood was dripping from her mouth.

Keith said of his wife: [emphasis added]

“She screamed so much, she’s coughing up blood from the screaming trying to get somebody to stop.

And again just another sign of how my wife is, she’s so wonderful. She’s saying, ‘Well maybe people aren’t stopping because I have a chain that looks like I broke out of prison,’ so she tried to tuck in her chain under her clothes.”

After hiding her chains, the mother managed to get picked up and be taken to safety.

While police are still searching for the abductors, Sherri has released new information as to how she got away.

During the “20/20” interview, Keith, who is speaking on his wife’s behalf due to the fact that she is still recovering, said of her release:

“She had a metal chain around her waist. She had a bag over her head. She was chained anytime she was in a vehicle.

They opened the door… they cut something, freed her restraints that were holding her in the vehicle and they pushed her out.”

Sherri sat down with police on Monday and gave her most detailed description of the abductors.

Sheriff Bosenko, the lead on the case, said the first suspect, the younger of the two, was described as having curly hair and a thick accent. The second had long black hair with spots of gray and thick eyebrows.

That being said, Bosenko and his team are still unsure of the motive behind Sherri’s abduction.

During an interview with Daily Mail on Tuesday, Sheriff Bosenko said:

“Right now we have no known reason why she was abducted, we do not know if she was specifically targeted or if this was a random abduction.

It’s still an active and ongoing investigation and we’re still looking for the reasons or the motive for this abduction.

Abductions are generally rare, especially in this area, but I mean in general an adult abduction is an unusual occurrence.”

Police are still having a hard time pinpointing the location of her discovery as well.

Sheriff Bosenko added:

“Right now we don’t know where that location is, it is still an active and ongoing investigation, my investigators did talk with her, I don’t have the information of whether they have been able to narrow down where she may have been held, but we are still working on this.”

The case is still being investigated and police are hoping to find the suspects soon. As for Sherri, she is back at home with her family and is recovering.

This Friday evening, “20/20” will be airing its exclusive interview with Keith.
