Singer Adam Levine spoke out after the Maroon 5 Super Bowl halftime performance to defend his band’s decision to perform.

There were reports that music artists were refusing to perform at the Super Bowl due to the controversy surrounding players protesting. Levine took to Instagram to explain the importance of the performance and why they agreed to perform.

“When we accepted the responsibility to perform at the SBHTS, I took out my pen and just wrote,” said Levine. “Some of the words that came to me in that moment eventually made their way onto the incredible lanterns that flew high and low tonight. We thank the universe for this historic opportunity to play on the world’s biggest stage. We thank our fans for making our dreams possible. And we thank our critics for always pushing us to do better. One Love.”

He also gave a statement prior to the halftime show defending his decision.

“No one thought about it more than I did,” said Levine. “No one put more thought and love into this than I did. … I spoke to many people, most importantly though, I silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision about how I felt.”

Sports, award shows, etc are no place for political expressions. If I am watching a show or whatever I don’t want to hear peoples stupid opinions. I think actors and sports personnel believe they are learned and we should listen to them but most are just sharing opinions. Keep to acting or whatever. Your ideas don’t impress me only irritate me and keep me from being a fan. Kudos to Maroon 5. They are the true Americans not Kamper whatever and his followers. They are the racists!

Well stated Mr. Levine. Remember when sports was an opportunity for people to set aside politics?
