Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez already made history by becoming the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Now she’s using her youth to her advantage and giving people an intimate look at her life as a soon-to-be congresswoman through Instagram stories.
People are taking notice — and loving it. Screenshotted photos from her first day at freshman orientation at the Capitol this week circulated on Twitter, showing Ocasio-Cortez’s excitement as she discovered the underground tunnels that flow through Capitol Hill. She even referred to the building as “Hogwarts.”
Call me a loser if you must — and LET’S TAKE POLITICS OUT OF THIS FOR A SECOND — but Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram is endearing and refreshingly earnest during new-member orientation week. (Seems she discovered the tunnels under Congress today?) pic.twitter.com/UgaCAMKS6d

Ocasio-Cortez gave an inside look at the duties of a congress member-elect, documenting her read through of a Congressional management manual she was given at orientation. “It’s essentially a manual that gets really into the details,” she wrote on her Instagram story Wednesday. “How to chart your first 60 days, budgeting hires, making a strategic plan.”
She summed up some of the more important points: “One of the most rigorous aspects of planning is deciding EARLY what our priorities are and how we want to lead. With limited resources, these decisions aren’t always easy. For example: would you rather have a Congress member with an amazing local services office or one that leads nationally on issues.”
She then put a poll up for her followers to vote.
I'm not the first to mention it, but Ocasio-Cortez's Instagram Story is endlessly fascinating in a nerdy civic-minded way pic.twitter.com/hg0LulkJbi

Earlier in the week, Ocasio-Cortez took to the platform live and talked politics while cooking mac and cheese in her apartment.

Ocasio-Cortez implied it won’t be the last time she does a live-streaming session. “Thanks to everyone who joined me last night for my first Instagram Live Cook + Q&A!” she tweeted Saturday. “It was great answering questions casual and political alike from constituents and supporters across the country. See you next time!”
Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram adventures are part of the change she’s bringing to Congress that is already shaking up the Capitol. After her discovery of the underground tunnels, Ocasio-Cortez participated in a sit-in in Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s office advocating for climate change legislation.
