US Soccer Star Ali Krieger Defends Teammate: Trump Is Angered by Women He Can’t ‘Control or Grope’

The U.S. women’s national team’s defense on the soccer field is legendary, but teammates of star player Megan Rapinoe took to defending her off the field and on social media after the president attacked her in a series of tweets.

An interview clip with Rapinoe went viral this week after the forward stated that she wouldn’t go to the “f**king White House” if invited by President Donald Trump.

Trump hit back by criticizing her decision to not participate in the national anthem, following in the footsteps of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

“I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS!” Trump tweeted Wednesday, adding that “Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag.”

The tweet didn’t sit well with Rapinoe’s current and former teammates and supporters.

“In regards to the ‘President’s’ tweet today, I know women who you cannot control or grope anger you, but I stand by [Rapinoe] & will sit this one out as well,” USWNT defender Ali Krieger wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “I don’t support this administration nor their fight against LGBTQ+ citizens, immigrants & our most vulnerable.”

With the tweet, Krieger became the third USWNT player to publicly say she wouldn’t go to the White House. Co-captain Alex Morgan told Time magazine last month she would refuse an invite.

“I don’t stand for a lot of things the current office stands for,” she said.

All three players went to the White House in 2015 to meet with former President Barack Obama after the team clinched its third World Cup title.

One of the captains from the that World Cup team, former player Abby Wambach, chimed in on Twitter as well and expressed her “love and solidarity” for her former teammate.

Wambach’s wife, author Glennon Doyle, shared a photo from the 2015 USWNT White House visit.

“Oh my gosh look! It’s Megan Rapinoe at the White House!” she tweeted. “It’s almost like it’s just the guy who lives there NOW she doesn’t feel like visiting.”

As of Thursday, Krieger is the only current player that has made a public statement about Trump’s criticism of Rapinoe. But other USWNT members, such as Allie Long and former player Sydney Leroux, gave little shoutouts to the current co-captain.

I love the USWNT. It’s ridiculous that this is an issue. This debate was settled as far as I was concerned. We are a free country and the players should be free to protest issues they feel are important as they like as long as they aren’t hurting anyone. Are people silently protesting the national anthem hurting you? No? That’s wonderful, you are allowed to then respectfully disagree with them and go about your life. This country was founded by protest! SO just because someone is protesting an issue that is important to them, it doesn’t mean it should garner… Read more »
