Anderson Cooper Doesn’t Understand Ivanka’s Role in the White House: ‘What Does She Actually Do?’

After it was reported Tuesday that President Donald Trump pressured his staff to give his daughter Ivanka Trump security clearance, CNN host Anderson Cooper brought into question the president’s daughter’s role in the administration.

“Part of CNN’s reporting is that Ivanka Trump wanted a high-level clearance so that she could study briefing books on foreign trips … why is she in the White House?” Cooper asked New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman on his show Tuesday night. “What does she actually do?”

“In terms of foreign trips, that’s a great question,” Haberman replied.

“What exactly Ivanka Trump needs to do with that information is unclear,” she later added. “She does have certain programs that she has pushed for that have global impact but those are primarily economic and not national security based.”

Cooper later questioned how both Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner were qualified to work in their respective White House positions.

“What is Jared Kushner’s expertise in Middle East peace and what is Ivanka Trump’s expertise in anything?” he asked.

CNN reported Tuesday that Trump specifically pressured former White House chief of staff John Kelly and White House counsel Don McGahn to grant his daughter a security clearance after both men recommended against it.

Although it’s in Trump’s authority to grant security clearances himself, the president reportedly didn’t want to seem like he was interfering in the process and thought it best if the clearance came from White House personnel security office, which traditionally provides clearances.

The report contradicts both the president’s and Ivanka’s past denials of Trump having any involvement in his daughter’s security clearance.

Adding flames to the fire, last week the New York Times reported that Trump ordered Kelly and other officials to give Kushner a security clearance despite their concerns as well.

Now that Kushner is working in Middle Eastern peace policy, his clearance makes more sense for his position. However, it’s not clear why Ivanka needs a security clearance to carry out her reported duties.

Ivanka takes no salary from her White House job, just still makes money from her involvement in Trump businesses which have international dealings, a fact Cooper pointed out could be a conflict with her security clearance. “She’s making millions and millions a year from this stuff,” he said.

  1. Daddy gave security clearances to both Ivanka and Jared when there were serious flags against doing that. Ivanka lied about it during a recent TV interview.

What will it take before Jared testifies against Trump?
