As the House Republicans defend President Donald Trump amid the ongoing impeachment probe, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) may have just given them more ammunition to try to discredit the inquiry.
In an interview on CNN Wednesday night, Ocasio-Cortez was speaking about impeachment when stated that the goal is to prevent “a potentially disastrous outcome” from happening in next year’s presidential election.
“We all need to move quite quickly because we’re talking about the potential compromise of the 2020 election. And so this is not just about something that has occurred, this about preventing a potentially disastrous outcome from occurring next year.”

Republicans have used comments by other House Democrats, such as those made by Rep. Al Green (Texas) who said in an MSNBC interview in May that he is “concerned if we don’t impeach this president, he will get re-elected,” to argue that impeachment is politically motivated.
During the first open hearings in the impeachment probe, Republicans printed Green’s comments on signs situated behind them.

Conservatives jumped on Ocasio-Cortez’s comments on Twitter to claim that Democrats are using impeachment to hurt Trump’s election chances.
Yesterday, @AOC told us what most of us already knew: that this sham impeachment exercise has never been about truth & justice, but about fear & hatred – hatred of @realDonaldTrump & fear that he'll be re-elected: https://t.co/XshTKSNisx— Jodey Arrington (@JodeyArrington) November 14, 2019

The gift that keeps on giving. @AOC going on national TV and telling the American people that the goal of impeachment is to make sure that the American people don’t re-elect @realDonaldTrump in 2020. https://t.co/CaK67gyT6o— The Reagan Battalion (@ReaganBattalion) November 14, 2019

AOC: Impeachment 'About Preventing a Potentially Disastrous Outcome from Occurring Next Year' wow https://t.co/dDYMwv9biV
As if we couldn't figure it out for ourselves, Democrats are actually saying it out loud – the sole purpose of this entire impeachment charade is to prevent President @realDonaldTrump from being re-elected.— Rep. Doug LaMalfa (@RepLaMalfa) November 14, 2019
This is an incredible and dangerous abuse of power. https://t.co/cNxHRuLUSp
On Saturday, Ocasio-Cortez accused Republicans of “turning this into a partisan issue.”
