Arizona’s Supreme Court building was evacuated Monday after a suspicious package was found, which reportedly tested positive for “homemade explosives.”
Sometime before 10:30 a.m. local time, court officials found a package with no return label in Arizona’s Supreme Court building, according to AZ Family. The building was evacuated, with Phoenix’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) posting a confirmation on X.
“BREAKING NEWS @ATFPhoenix is on scene at the Arizona Supreme Court Building at 1501 W. Washington St. Phoenix, AZ to investigate a suspicious substance found at the location,” the ATF stated.
While it is unclear when the package was initially delivered, an email reportedly sent to the court’s mail room confirmed the package “tested positive for homemade explosives,” according to 12News.
Per the email, a complete sweep of the building will be conducted with the package removed in the process.
Both the State Courts Building and surrounding parking lots have been evacuated and closed, with videos circulating online showing the law enforcement presence in the downtown Phoenix area.
The Daily Caller News Foundation confirmed that Arizona’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) is leading the investigation into the suspicious package.
It remains unclear how long the closure will last as staff were sent home to work remotely for the remainder of the day.
DPS did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Due to the incident, operations for the Arizona Supreme Court and appellate courts could be further affected, 12News reported.
