An American coupleās morning jog through Venice, Italy, turned into an unexpected lesson in local rules after the boyfriend was reportedly criticized for running shirtless.
According to Fox News, the woman documented the experience in an Instagram video posted last month, saying the couple initially had no idea the attire could lead to a problem.
The video has since attracted nearly half a million likes.
"We didn't know that it's illegal to run shirtless through Venice," she said.
The couple noticed people reacting negatively as they ran through the city.
According to the woman, some locals shook their heads, appeared upset, and one person yelled at her boyfriend, Mike.
The couple stopped to investigate and discovered that running shirtless in Venice is prohibited under local rules.
"Sorry, Venetian people, we didn't know," the woman said.
The incident sparked a debate online, with some viewers criticizing the tourists for not dressing appropriately while others questioned whether visitors could reasonably be expected to know such a specific restriction before arriving.
"Everyone should be wearing a shirt," one commenter wrote.
Another person joked, "Clothes in public? Who would have thought."
Other viewers were more sympathetic, with one noting that tourists may not know every local regulation before visiting another country.
Travel expert Eric Bowman, editor-in-chief of Travel Pulse, said Venice is far from the only destination where visitors can encounter rules that differ sharply from what they are accustomed to at home.
"We've seen a lot of different bans come up for what travelers can and can't do ā a lot of new fees that have come up for how much they're gonna have to pay to be there," Bowman said.
He said many restrictions are intended to address problems caused by large numbers of tourists, including drunken behavior, disrespectful conduct and visitors ignoring local customs.
Clothing rules can also catch travelers off guard. Bowman advised tourists visiting Italy to keep swimwear at the beach and cover up before walking through town.
"It's not California, unfortunately," he said.
Other unusual restrictions around the world include rules involving high heels at certain ancient sites in Greece and camouflage clothing in some Caribbean destinations.
Bowman recommended that travelers research local regulations before leaving and consider consulting a travel adviser who can flag rules that might otherwise be easy to miss.
"Some of them charge fees, some of them don't," Bowman said. "You can pretty much start in your local community if you don't have one."
