A Wisconsin brewery already under scrutiny for a previous social media post about President Donald Trump is facing fresh backlash after announcing plans to celebrate the death of Sen. Mitch McConnell with discounted beer.
According to Fox News, Minocqua Brewing Company shared an Instagram post Monday promoting what it called "half-price beer day," saying the promotion would begin when the longtime Kentucky Republican dies.
The brewery claimed it chose the theme because it believes McConnell is responsible for "about half of all America's current problems."
In the post, the company also criticized Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear over the timing of a potential special election to replace McConnell, who has been absent from the Senate for more than a month following a hospitalization after a fall at his home.
McConnell, 84, has not publicly announced plans to leave office.
Last week, Beshear called on the senator to either demonstrate he is capable of continuing to serve or resign.
"I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign," Beshear wrote in a letter obtained by Fox News Digital.
The brewery's latest post said it intentionally reserved its previously announced "free beer day" promotion for "someone more special" while encouraging supporters to purchase and wear "half-price beer day" T-shirts.
The comments have renewed criticism of the brewery after a January social media post suggested it would give away free beer on the day Trump dies.
Although the post did not explicitly name Trump, it generated widespread backlash.
The brewery is also fighting to keep its alcohol permit.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wisconsin's Department of Revenue notified owner Kirk Bangstad that it intended to revoke the brewery's permit after authorities allegedly discovered beer had been transported from Illinois without the required permits or taxes.
Bangstad has argued the state's actions are excessive and that the alleged tax violations do not justify revoking the brewery's license.
The permit was scheduled to be revoked Tuesday.
However, the Wisconsin Department of Revenue confirmed that Minocqua Brewing Company filed an administrative appeal, preventing the revocation from taking effect while the appeal is pending.
Bangstad is also the founder of the Minocqua Brewing Company SuperPAC, a political organization that says it works to defeat Republican elected officials who challenged the 2020 election results and criticized the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
