Fox News asked Democratic lawmakers a simple question ā what part of President Donald Trumpās State of the Union address Tuesday drew their attention the most.
Only a handful responded, but their answers varied immensely.
āI think he was able to maintain energy through it,ā Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) said. āI mean heās 80 years old. I thought it was very powerful to honor a lot of the veterans there.ā
Trump is currently the second most senior president in American history at 79.
He gave the longest State of the Union in American history on Tuesday as his speech went for one hour and 48 minutes. This broke President Bill Clintonās previous record of 1 hour, 28 minutes and 49 seconds.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Trumpās speech reinforced his belief the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) needs congressional reforms.
āDHS has to start acting lawfully, and they are not acting lawfully. They are literally in the middle of building warehouse prisons to detain legal immigrants to this country. Thatās the definition of lawlessness,ā Murphy said.
Other Democratsā responses also had immigration-related takeaways.
Rep. Lou Correa (D-Calif.) said he believes the president isnāt doing enough to accommodate undocumented immigrants who want to lawfully become a part of the country.
āIām for prioritizing Americans, but Iām also for being fair with those who have worked really hard that donāt have any documents. And thatās, I think, where I kind of draw the line,ā Correa said.
āWhatās wrong with thanking those that work hard ā all those immigrants who are in the military ā why donāt you thank them?ā Correa said, referring to several moments in Tuesdayās speech as he Trump l acknowledged American service members.
