An unprecedented United Auto Workers union (UAW) strike began at midnight after negotiations fell through Thursday.
It is the first time in American history that Ford, GM, and Stellantis are all on strike, according to Fox News.
The union posted to X, formerly Twitter, just after midnight Friday, stating, “The UAW Stand Up Strike begins at all three of the Big Three.”
The Stellantis plant in Toledo, Ohio, the Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan, and the GM plant in Wentzville, Missouri, are affected. Those without a contract will continue to work until further notice.
This came after the UAW demanded a four-day 32-hour workweek, in addition to a 46% pay increase, per ABC News.
GM offered a 20% pay increase along with inflation protection, quicker promotion paths, and added time off, via CNBC, but this was rejected.
CNN also reported Ford offered a 20% pay increase over the life of the contract which included an immediate 10% raise. This was also rejected.
News of the strike has led to mixed responses. While union supporters believe this is a necessary move, others aren’t so sure.
Writer Luis Feliz Leon posted to X, stating, “Workers walk out of the Toledo Assembly plant weaving the UAW and wearing strike ready t-shirts.”
Newsmax reported 13,000 workers are now on strike.
Car market economist Car Dealership Guy wrote, “A simultaneous strike on Ford, GM, and Stellantis has *never* happened in the UAW’s 88-year history.”
“Could have devastating consequences.”
