Erika Kirk, the widow of assassinated Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk, explained her stance towards her late husbandâs accused killer in a recent New York Times (NYT) interview.
Mrs. Kirk told the NYT in an interview published Sunday that in response to being asked about whether she would want to seek the death penalty against Charlie Kirkâs accused assassin she does not want the alleged assassinâs âbloodâ on her âledger.â She also said that she strongly believes her husbandâs assassination was âGodâs plan.â
âIâm a strong believer that this was Godâs plan,â Mrs. Kirk told the outlet. âAnd itâs so clear-cut. It couldnât be more Charlie.â
âIâve had so many people ask, âDo you feel anger toward this man? Like, do you want to seek the death penalty?â Iâll be honest. I told our lawyer, I want the government to decide this,â she continued. âI do not want that manâs blood on my ledger. Because when I get to heaven, and Jesus is like: âUh, eye for an eye? Is that how we do it?â And that keeps me from being in heaven, from being with Charlie?â
Mrs. Kirkâs comments come after Charlie Kirk was fatally shot on Sept. 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley Universityâs campus. The accused assassin, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested by police on Sept. 11. Utah prosecutors on Sept. 16 charged Robinson with aggravated murder â a capital offense that can result in the death penalty for Robinson, if he is convicted.
Mrs. Kirk also said in the NYT interview that she is now able âto see the Bible in such technicolor.â
âTo be so serene in saying, âThy will be done. I surrender to it.â Do I like it? No,â Mrs. Kirk said. âThat was the love of my life, my soul mate, my best friend.â
âBut Godâs plan is always greater than ours,â she added.
Mrs. Kirk similarly said during a speech at her husbandâs memorialservice on Sunday that she forgave his alleged killer. TPUSA announced Thursday that it had unanimously elected Mrs. Kirk to serve as the next CEO and chair of the board for the organization.
