One year after his stunning rise to New York City’s highest office, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has demonstrated that his influence extends far beyond City Hall.
According to Fox News, the socialist mayor played a central role in Tuesday’s Democratic congressional primaries, helping propel three progressive Candidates to victory in races that reshaped New York’s political map and dealt a blow to the Democratic establishment.
The biggest upset came in New York’s 13th Congressional District, where Mamdani-backed candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly defeated longtime incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat. The victory marked a major political shock in a district represented by Espaillat for a decade.
Espaillat entered the race with support from prominent Democratic figures, including New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. Despite those endorsements, Chevalier was able to secure a narrow win after running a campaign focused heavily on affordability and progressive policy priorities.
Another victory came in the race to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez. State Assembly Member Claire Valdez, who is aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America and backed by Mamdani, defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso by a wide margin.
Speaking after her victory, Valdez celebrated what she described as a growing movement within the Democratic Party.
“Tonight, we haven’t just won an election. We have declared that this movement is durable — that it is growing, and that it will not stop until working people are no longer asked to just build the table, no longer just offered a seat at the table, but will run the table,” she said.
A third Mamdani-backed candidate, former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, also secured a decisive victory over incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman.
All three winning Candidates campaigned on issues tied to affordability and cost-of-living concerns in New York City. They also took critical positions regarding Israel, a topic that drew significant attention during the campaigns.
Mamdani invested considerable political capital in the races despite being only months into his mayoral term. He campaigned extensively for the Candidates and argued that the Democratic Party must embrace change.
At a post-election celebration, the mayor praised what he described as a new direction for the party.
The results quickly sparked reactions beyond New York. Progressive Democrats pointed to the victories as evidence of growing momentum within the party, while Republicans argued the outcomes highlighted the increasing influence of the Democratic Party’s left wing.
With three high-profile victories in a single night, Mamdani leaves the primary season with greater influence and a stronger position inside New York Politics than he held just weeks ago.
