While Mexico’s President continues to claim that safety and security are improving under her watch, the recent discoveries of clandestine gravesites and cartel incineration sites in the border city of Matamoros paint a much different picture of the cartel-controlled region.

In recent days, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum visited Matamoros, where she held several public events praising her administration’s virtues. However, just a few miles from there, groups of “searchers” were busy combing through two newly discovered clandestine gravesites where victims had been incinerated. The searchers did not have a police escort, as they had in the past, since all law enforcement personnel had been moved to bolster security for Sheinbaum.

The sites were discovered last week on the outskirts of Matamoros, where the search group “Colectivo Desaparecidos de Pie Hasta Encontrarlos” reported finding two separate sites containing a large number of human remains. The remains showed signs of having been burned in a clandestine fashion. The remains included several bone fragments and even some complete human skulls.

As Breitbart News Foundation has been reporting, search groups have been consistently discovering cartel gravesites throughout the Tamaulipas border, something that has been exposing the reality of life on the border at a time when Mexican politicians continue to falsely claim that the country is safe. Drug cartels in Mexico continue to use clandestine crematoriums and gravesites to dispose of the bodies of their victims. Most of the victims in these mass graves had previously been abducted by cartel gunmen.

The tactic allows Mexico’s government to artificially keep its violent crime statistics low, because without a body, authorities classify the case as a missing person, instead of a kidnapping or murder. In Matamoros, numerous public places are full of missing-persons posters, something Mexico’s government has been unable to hide.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart News Foundation traveled to Mexico City and the states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities. The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas, including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas, if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart News Foundation’s Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.A. Espinoza” from Tamaulipas.
