NewsNation host Chris Cuomo defended the motivations of former President Donald Trumpâs supporters during a Tuesday podcast.
Trump garnered over 74 million votes in the 2020 election and is currently leading Vice President Kamala Harris 48% to 47% nationally, according to a Sunday New York Times/Siena College poll. Cuomo, on âThe Chris Cuomo Project,â argued that Trumpâs supporters back him because heâs âa disruptive force of what they want changed,â not because they are âlike Trump.â

âMan, if you want to punish, Trump is your boy. He is the spirit animal of grievance. Something that we keep getting wrong in the media, and I think a lot of us just in general, is that you think people who support Trump are like Trump, and thatâs not true,â Cuomo said. âMost of the people who support Trump are desperate to change the system, and they are willing to swallow everything that he isnât because of what he is â which is a disruptive force of what they want changed.â
âDoesnât mean that theyâre just all bigots or that they all act like him or think like him or sound like him. They just want what heâs selling them, which is to change, disrupt and break the system,â he continued. âWill he do it? I donât think so, but that doesnât matter. Thatâs for you to decide. Thatâs for all the voters to decide.â
Trump is leading Harris on the economy 58% to 42% and on inflation 62% to 37%, according to a Sunday CBS/YouGov poll.
Cuomo said during his podcast Sept. 3 that he does not think Trump should face prosecution during the presidential election, despite his belief that some of the cases have merit.
âI donât like the cases that were brought against him â two of âem in New York. The other ones, the classified documents, he did it, okay? Trying to rig this election â he did it,â Cuomo said. âHe messed with them in Georgia, and he shouldnât have, and he knew it. Is it worth prosecuting the guy in the middle of an election? I donât know. I would say no, and I know thatâs crazy.â
