Stevie Nicks, lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, revealed why they will no longer continue performing together.
In an interview with Vulture, Nicks, 75, spoke about whether the band would tour again following the death of member Christine McVie.
âWe did go out on the road and do a year-and-a-half tour with Neil Finn and Mike Campbell. We had a really great time and it was a huge tour. That was there in the realm of possibility,â she shared.
However, Nicks said when McVie died, she felt like she was irreplaceable.
âYou just canât. Without her, what is it? You know what I mean?â she added.
Nick referred to McVie as her âmusical soul mateâ and her âbest friendâ whom she âspent more time with than any of my other best friends outside of Fleetwood Mac.â
She continued:
âChristine was my best friend. When I think about Taylor Swiftâs song âYouâre on Your Own, Kidâ and the line âyou always have been,â it was like, that was Christine and I. We were on our own in that band. We always were. We protected each other. Who am I going to look over to on the right and have them not be there behind that Hammond organ? When she died, I figured we really canât go any further with this. Thereâs no reason to.â

Speaking of McVieâs songs, Nicks called McVie âthe pop star.â
âShe wrote all those really super pop hits. None of the rest of us could write those songs,â she explained. âWhat would happen is weâd have to take the songs out like we did when she actually retired for 18 years.â
She added, âWe couldnât re-create those songs. So we became a much more hard-rock band.â
According to McVieâs death certificate obtained by People, she died on Nov. 30, 2022, of a stroke with a secondary cause of death listed as cancer. She was 79 years old.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times following her death, Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood said he couldnât imagine performing again without McVie.
âI think right now, I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris,â he shared. âIâd say weâre done, but then weâve all said that before. Itâs sort of unthinkable right now.â
