āSound of freedomā Director Alejandro Monteverde discussed plans for a sequel set in Haiti.
During an interview withĀ VarietyĀ executive editor of film and media, Tatiana Siegel, he said, āThereās definitely a lot of interest to exploring a little deeper, because this is just the tip of the iceberg.āĀ
āThereās a lot of interest to kind of explore Haiti, whatās happening in Haiti. Thereās talks focusing on Haiti,ā he added.
He mentioned how that location was a specific point of interest for the filmās main character, Former CIA and DHS agent Tim Ballard. He said, āHaiti was a big part of Timās work.ā
Monteverde noted, āI was very tempted to do Haiti on this film. But I wanted to do an origin story, and it was too much material. I needed to end where I ended.ā
āSound of freedom,ā a film about child trafficking, is the highest-grossing independent movie in recent years. It has made $173 million so far and had a longer journey from film to screen than usual.
Monteverde also spoke out about negative media attention for the film stating, āI was like really sick. I was like, āThis is all wrong. Thatās not true.āā
He called it āheartbreakingā and said, āMy instinct was to run. I want to hide. I donāt want to give any more interviews.ā
Despite this, he did give a few interviews before the release. He said he had no wish to think of regrets and that lead actor Jim Caviezel was āso committed and so professional on set.ā
He also detailed how Caviezel worked through being sick. Monteverde said, āI respect that as a director to have an actor that is just gonna die for the part.ā
While the sequel is still just being discussed, Monteverde was also asked about running an awards-season campaign and he said, āI would love that.ā
He added, āFor me, it would be incredible even just to go and sit down in one of those chairs.ā
