Pollster Frank Luntz on Thursday criticized Vice President Kamala Harrisâ rhetoric during her Wednesday interview and economic speech.
Luntz appeared on âSquawk Box,â where co-anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin played a clip of Harrisâ interview with MSNBCâs Stephanie Ruhle where she repeatedly asserted that wealthy Americans and corporations need to âpay their fair shareâ of taxes. Luntz said voters do not want to hear that phase, as they want more specific policies from Harris that she is not delivering.

âSome of what she has said in the last few weeks are exactly what voters want to hear. That is not. âPay their fair share.â Weâve heard it now for how many years, 30, maybe 40? What exactly is fair share? ⌠And the issue for that is itâs a sound bite, itâs a slogan. And I know that Iâm a messaging person so thatâs my job,â the pollster said. âHowever, the public demands a detailed plan of action and theyâre not getting it from her ⌠Sheâs addressing housing, sheâs addressing health care, sheâs addressing food and fuel, so sheâs doing the policy.â
Luntz then turned his attention to Harrisâ economic speech in Pittsburgh, where the vice president pledged to be âpragmatic. â
âIâll give you an example, âpragmaticâ versus âcommon sense.â Pragmatic says that sheâs going to do whatâs smart polling-wise, whatâs smart politically,â he said. âWhat the public is asking for is, âIf youâre going to raise taxes, tell us where itâs going to come, tell us the impact,â which is what theyâre looking for and in the end, âLet us keep just a little bit more of what we make and let us be just a little bit more affordable in how we live.ââ
Luntz gave Harris credit for being âfocused on the futureâ and contrasted her approach to former President Donald Trump, who he said is âfocused on the past.â But the pollster also noted the vice president âonlyâ referred to âgood union jobsâ rather than good jobs for all Americans.
âHowever, she only talks about good union jobs. Weâre all hard working taxpayers. Weâre all part of this economy,â he said. âAnd for her, at this close to the election, the focus on the specific group, is not helpful of when the economy affects everyone.â
âIâm a moderator of focused groups so I know messaging when I create it. This is something that was driven by focus groups,â Luntz added. âThis did not feel like it was her, herself. It felt like someone like me went through the speech, added a few phrases ⌠If you repeat yourself three times, which is what she did, then you know itâs a line. Then you know itâs not something that she really feels.â
Ruhle reacted to her interview with Harris by defending her for not providing a âclear, directâ answer to her question about tariffs.
