Bannon Says He Can ‘Crush’ the Left If They Continue to Talk About Identity Politics

White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon believes he has the upper hand on Democrats if they continue to talk about race and identity politics.

“The longer they talk about identity politics, I got ’em. I want them to talk about racism every day. If the left is focused on race and identity, and we go with economic nationalism, we can crush the Democrats,” Bannon said in an interview with The American Prospect published Wednesday.

Bannon joined the Trump campaign as chief executive in August 2016, leaving his role as executive chair of Breitbart News, which he called “the platform for the alt-right.”

Bannon also touched on the recent racial protests in places such as Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend where a mixture of neo-Nazis, white nationalists, and white supremacists gathered for a “Unite the Right” rally.

“Ethno-nationalism—it’s losers,” he told The American Prospect. “It’s a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, uh, help crush it more.”

“These guys are a collection of clowns,” Bannon added.
