Ben Carson revealed during an interview on Wednesday that an incident during a congressional hearing may not have been as embarrassing as first reported.
Speaking to Fox Business the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary discussed an incident during a hearing on Tuesday. As IJR Blue previously reported, Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif) asked Carson about real-estate owned properties, leading to an interesting exchange.
PORTER: I’d also like you to get back to me, if you don’t mind, to explain the disparity in REO rates — do you know what an REO is?
CARSON: An Oreo?
PORTER: No, not an Oreo. An REO. R-E-O.
CARSON: Real estate.
Carson responded to reports that he did not understand what she was asking by clarifying that he could not hear and also claiming that some used it as an opportunity to make fun of him.
“You can see that some of the networks are only interested in those kinds of sound bites that they can use to ridicule,” said Carson to Fox News. “The fact of the matter is I was having difficulty hearing her.”
The secretary showed there were no hard feelings by sending her a pack of Oreo cookies.

He also expressed his knowledge on the issue and the progress that has been made.
“And the REO portfolio just over the last 10 years has dramatically decreased by ten-fold you know 65 thousand down to 65 hundred,” Carson said.
Carson suggested that Porter could visit his office to discuss the issue and pushed back at her for her lack of current knowledge.
“So I suspect when Katie Porter was an expert in this area things were very different that’s why I invited her to speak with our staff that deals with these so they can bring her up to date — maybe she would then be able to understand what’s going on,” Carson said.
