Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) gave a full-throated endorsement of rising hip-hop star Cardi B on Wednesday — at least in terms of her reverence for former President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his legacy of Social Security.
Sanders made the declaration in response to a recent interview Cardi B, born Belcalis Almanzar, gave to GQ magazine. Discussing her passion for American history, specifically the presidents, Cardi B singled out Franklin Delano Roosevelt as the one she loved most.
“First of all, he helped us get over the Depression, all while he was in a wheelchair,” she explained. “Like, this man was suffering from polio at the time of his presidency, and yet all he was worried about was trying to make America great — make America great again for real.
“He’s the real ‘Make America Great Again,’ because if it wasn’t for him, old people wouldn’t even get Social Security,” she added, referencing President Donald Trump’s trademark campaign slogan.
“Cardi B is right,” Sanders tweeted Wednesday. “If we are really going to make America great we need to strengthen Social Security so that seniors are able to retire with the dignity they deserve.”

Sanders’ comments on Cardi B immediately sent Twitter into a fury — the bizarre convergence of the 76-year-old senator from Vermont and the 25-year-old rapper from the Bronx was simply too much for some people to handle:
If you saw this tweet and did not say “CARDI B IS RIGHT,” out loud, in your best Bernie Sanders imitation, you are made of stone https://t.co/Eyh871NZ5J

I want to live in a world where Bernie holds a rally with Cardi B and he walks out to Bodak Yellow. https://t.co/cTkzKSl4By

What a time to be alive….both Bernie Sanders and Grover Norquist are referring to Cardi B when it comes to policy.
I will claim some of the credit for this. https://t.co/X8gDHyv0Sp

But Sanders and Cardi B may not see eye to eye on every issue. When it comes to taxes, the rapper has voiced a more conservative viewpoint.
“Uncle Sam, I want to know what you’re doing with my f**king tax money,” she said in a March Instagram video.
