Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) came to the defense of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) after the congresswoman received an onslaught of attacks from internet trolls, including the president of the United States, who questioned her loyalty to the country she serves.
At a Fox News town hall Monday night, host Bret Baier called Sanders a “staunch supporter” of the congresswoman.
“Hold it, hold it, hold it,” the senator interjected, saying that he’s only talked to Omar about two times but he does respect her.
“I support a Muslim member of Congress not to be attacked every single day with outrageous, racist remarks.”
Omar has been accused of using language that plays to anti-Semitic tropes and Sanders admitted she “has got to do maybe a better job of speaking to the Jewish community” but said he didn’t believe she is anti-Semitic.
“I’m Jewish. I’ve lost — my father’s family was devastated by Hitler so this is an issue of some sensitivity to me. So I will do everything in my power, and I hope that every member of Congress will fight not only anti-Semitism but racism and anti-Muslim activity so that we create a non-discriminatory society. But it is not anti-Semitic to be critical of a right-wing government in Israel. That is not anti-Semitic.”

Sanders first came to Omar’s defense on Friday after President Donald Trump shared a video of the Muslim congresswoman talking about the effects of 9/11 on the Muslim-American community and then showing video footage of the attacks on the World Trade Center.
The video was posted after two Fox News hosts questioned Omar’s loyalty to the United States based on her Muslim faith and status as a refugee and immigrant.
Ilhan Omar is a leader with strength and courage. She won't back down to Trump's racism and hate, and neither will we. The disgusting and dangerous attacks against her must end.
