President Joe Biden is defending his decision to tell donors it was ātimeā to put former President Donald Trump in a ābullseyeā just days before an assassination attempt.
During an interview with NBC Newsā Lester Holt, the president was asked about his inflammatory rhetoric about Trump in light of the attempt on his life.
āWell, letās talk about the conversation this has started. And itās really about language. When we say out loud and the consequences of those, you called your opponent an existential threat. On a call a week ago, you said itās time to put Trump in the bullseye. Thereās some dispute about the context, but I think you appreciate that words matter,ā Holt said.
Biden responded, āI didnāt say crosshairs. Iām talking about focus on. Look, the truth of the matter was when I guess I was talking about it at the time, was there was very little focus on Trumpās agenda.
Watch the video below:
Holt interjected, āYeah. The term is bullseye.ā
āIt was a mistake to use⦠I didnāt I didnāt say crosshairs. Iām the bullseye. Focus on him. Focus on what heās doing,ā Biden said.
He added, āFocus on one of his strongest policies. Focus on the number of lies he told the main focus. I mean, thereās thereās a whole range of things that, look, Iām not the guy that said I want to be a dictator on day one. Iām not the guy that refused to accept the outcome of the election. Iām not the guy who said wonāt accept the outcome of this election automatically. You canāt only love your country when you win. And so the focus was on what heās saying, and I mean the ideaā¦ā
Still, Holt asked, āTaken a step back and done a little soul searching on things that you may have said that could incite, people who are not balanced?ā
āWell, I donāt think. How do you talk about the threat to democracy, which is real? When a president says things like he says, do you just not say anything cause it may incite somebody?ā he continued. āĀ Look, I, Iāve, Iāve not engaged in that rhetoric. Now, my, my, my opponent is against that rhetoric. He talks about a bloodbath if he loses, talking about how heās kind of forgive of or actually, I guess, suspend the sentences of all those who were arrested and sentenced to go to jail because of what happened in the Capitol. Iām not out there making fun of like, I remember the picture of Donald Trump when Nancy Pelosi was hit with a hammer.. joking about it.ā
During a meeting with donors last week, Biden said, āWe need to move forward. Look, we have roughly 40 days til the convention, 120 days til the election. We canāt waste any more time being distracted.ā
āI have one job, and thatās to beat Donald Trump. Iām absolutely certain Iām the best person to be able to do that. So, weāre done talking about the debate, itās time to put Trump in a bullseye,ā he added.
