President-elect Joe Biden’s inaugural committee will be participating in the national day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“We are excited to announce that we will join the National Day of Service on January 18 in honor of [Martin Luther King Day] and encourage Americans across the country to give back and serve in their communities,” the committee announced on Twitter on Monday.

It continued, “We’re partnering with service leaders and organizations to organize safe events that focus on COVID-19 relief and address challenges exacerbated by the pandemic: hunger, racial injustice, homelessness, and more.”

The day of service will come just two days before Biden’s inauguration.

The committee is also planning a Lincoln Memorial lighting ceremony to honor COVID-19 victims ahead of the inauguration, as IJR previously reported.

“On January 19, we will host a memorial to honor those who have died, with the first-ever lighting around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. We invite communities across the country to join us in illuminating buildings and ringing church bells in a moment of remembrance,” the committee announced on Twitter on Thursday.

It added, “During this time when so many Americans are grieving the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, it is important that we honor the lives lost to COVID-19 and renew our commitment to coming together to end the pandemic and rebuild our nation.”

The committee also encouraged Americans to enjoy the inauguration from “home, rather than traveling to Washington, DC.”

Biden will be sworn in on Jan. 20 and has plans to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and lead Americans through other struggles facing the nation.

“The challenges we face as a nation will not disappear overnight, but as we look forward to the start of a new year, I’m filled with fresh hope about the possibilities of better days to come,” Biden tweeted on Thursday.

He went on, “After a year of pain and loss, let us unite, heal, and rebuild in 2021.”
