Former Vice President Joe Biden (D) issued a warning to Democrats after he heard the news that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party gained a resounding victory in the United Kingdom’s election on Thursday.
“Boris is winning in a walk,” Biden told reporters at a fundraiser in California. He said that the headlines about the election would read, “Look what happens when the Labour Party moves so, so far to the left. It comes up with ideas that are not able to be contained in a rational basis quickly.”
Biden has positioned himself as a moderate and downplayed the notion that the base of the Democratic Party has embraced a far-left agenda.
“You guys got it all wrong what happened,” Biden said, adding that the Ocasio-Cortez’s election did not signal a sudden lurch toward support of far-left policies.
“It’s just bad judgment. You all thought that what happened was the party moved extremely to the left after Hillary. AOC was a new party, She’s a bright, wonderful person. But where’s the party? Come on, man.”
In the wake of Johnson’s victory pundits in America wondered whether the U.K.’s election could signal trouble for Democrats in the 2020 presidential election, noting that the 2016 Brexit vote was seen as foreshadowing President Donald Trump’s victory later that year.
However, others noted that Johnson worked hard to make the election a referendum on Brexit, arguing that the election was not a rejection of the Labour Party’s policies.
