Democratic Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont signed legislation that bans Glock pistols Wednesday, making the state the third to prohibit future sales of the ubiquitous pistol.
Lamont signed the legislation into law Wednesday, according to the Connecticut General Assembly’s website. Top leaders from National Rifle Association and Second Amendment Foundation condemned Lamont’s approval of the measure, saying he was attacking law-abiding gun owners with the measure.
“Machine guns are illegal in every state, including Connecticut. But they are still showing up on our streets, thanks to DIY machine gun pistols that can easily be converted into fully automatic weapons using a Lego-sized switch,” Lamont claimed in a March release.
“Connecticut’s ridiculous Glock-style pistol ban is nothing less than a direct attack on the most commonly owned, lawfully carried handguns in America,” NRA-ILA Executive Director John Commerford said in a release. “Throughout the country, progressive politicians are launching a coordinated national assault on our Second Amendment rights. They aren’t targeting criminals; they’re criminalizing law-abiding citizens by banning the very firearms millions of Americans depend on every day for self-defense.”
The NRA and SAF sued Maryland within hours of Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signing a “Glock ban” into law Tuesday. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a similar ban in October 2025.
“These Glock bans prohibit some of the most popular handguns – and guns overall – in the whole country. Guns that are unquestionably protected by the Second Amendment,” SAF Director of Legal Operations Bill Sack told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Just yesterday we filed suit against Maryland for passing essentially the same bill. We will be taking a very hard look at Connecticut next.”
Supporters of the move claim that so-called “Glock switches” are used to illegally convert Glock pistols into machine guns, labeling them “machine gun convertible pistols” in the legislation. Under current federal law, it is illegal to possess or manufacture a fully-automatic firearm that is not registered or authorized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) under the provisions of the National Firearms Act of 1934.
Glock pistols are widely recognized for their popularity in the United States, frequently featured in rankings of top-selling firearms by publications such as Guns and Guns and Ammo magazine. According to a 2018 press release issued by the company, the Glock 19X model achieved sales of over 100,000 units within the first six months following its launch.
