Support for the Border Wall Reaches a Record High as Congress Continues to Bicker Over Funding

A new poll is showing that a larger percentage of Americans are in support of the border wall compared to other polls in the past.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll released Sunday revealed what some Americans think about border security and the government shutdown. They polled 788 adults in January, and the majority of those polled were Democrats and independents.

According to the poll, 42 percent of respondents support the border wall. In a 2017 poll, only 37 percent said they supported the wall. While the majority still opposes the idea of a wall, the higher polling shows a slow change in opinion to support the wall.

However, the poll shows that many have an extremely negative view about the shutdown, with 53 percent of the respondents viewing Trump as being responsible.

During the shutdown, Trump has spent his time at the border and at the White House attempting to convince Democrats to come to a solution. Trump has slammed Democrats in tweets for traveling instead of working to end the shutdown.

“I’m in the White House, waiting,” Trump tweeted Sunday morning. “The Democrats are everywhere but Washington as people await their pay. They are having fun and not even talking!”

Some Democrats have described border security as a “manufactured crisis” and called the border wall “immoral.” It is uncertain when the shutdown will end and if they will be able to come to a compromise.

Support for the wall may be up, but support for the President is falling, according to a recent NPR-Marist poll. His 30% core is unchanged, but those who absolutely won’t vote for him in 2020 had risen to an astounding 57%! Ouch! Idealy, it should be closer to 40%.

70% say the wall should not have been used as a reason to shut the government.
