Botham Jean’s life was taken when Dallas cop Amber Guyger walked into the wrong apartment and shot him. His family has every reason to be vengeful, but instead, his brother offered a message of forgiveness.

On Wednesday, Guyger was sentenced to serve 10 years for killing Jean in his apartment. The story caught national attention after it was revealed that Guyger had killed Jean after mistaking his apartment for her own and claiming he was an intruder.

A judge quickly found that Guyger was in the wrong and convicted her of manslaughter.

Before she received her sentence, Jean’s 18-year-old brother, Brandt Jean, took the stand to make a statement. Instead of shaming Guyger for taking the life of his brother, he instead offered a message of love and forgiveness.

Watch Jean’s statement below:

“I hope you go to God with all the guilt, all the bad things you have done in the past — each and every one of us may have done something that we’re not supposed to do. If you truly are sorry, I know, I can speak for myself, I know I forgive you. And I know if you go to God and ask him, he will forgive you. And I don’t think anyone thinks that — again, I’m speaking for myself, not even on behalf of my family — but I love you just like anyone else. And I’m not going to say I hope you rot and die, just like my brother did, but I personally want the best for you. And I wasn’t going to say this in front of my family or anyone, but I don’t even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want you to do.”

Jean told Guyger the best she could do would be to “give [her] life to Christ.”

He then posed a question before the judge.

“I don’t know if this is possible, but can I give her a hug?” Jean asked.

His compassion drew the emotion of the whole courtroom, including the judge who later joined the hug.

I just hope Mr. Jean does not get vilified by his family, piers, or the Radicals for his statement. This young man has truly put Feet to his Faith. God bless him.

This is touching I must admit but she still murdered a guy in his own home who was literally eating ice cream at the time she entered. Why would you double tap a guy burglar or not if he was merely eating ice cream when you entered? I’m sure she feels bad but her serious error in judgement on discharging her weapon without even giving a command to surrender deserves legal punishment. She took a life something we can’t create or replace well I guess reproduction creates life, but we can’t replace dead offspring with new ones. She can be… Read more »

Manslaughter is a fair sentence. How many years does she have to serve? At least the brother is a good Christian man and knows how to behave. He set’s a good example on how Jesus would have us all to behave. God bless him and her. It was an unfortunate happenstance not something done with malice. If it had been done with malice Murder and subsequent execution would be appropriate. She and he will carry this around for the remainder of their days. I hope she can forgive her self as well. This is a story that should be blasted… Read more »

The love of God is so perfect and powerful that it is capable of making you love the person which has done you the most harm in this world, because the love of God does not have limits no matter if you are white, black, yellow, red good or bad. This love, loves you the just the way you are and if you have Jesus in your heart this is the very way in which you will love. The Bible says the we Christians have the mind of Christ, and Jesus is God. 1 Corinthians 2:16 And God is LOVE.

Hope in the world, thank you Jesus! Oh if this would only be shown again and again in the mainstream media for all to see and for all to learn, including and starting with myself.
