Before eulogizing his father, former President George W. Bush greeted presidents and first ladies past and present, and he repeated a kind gesture to Michelle Obama.
At the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday afternoon, Bush slipped the former first lady a piece of candy while shaking hands.

The move, which brought out a laugh from Michelle, is a repeat of what the former president did at the funeral of John McCain. The subtle move at McCain’s funeral was captured on camera and became a viral moment.
“I didn’t realize at the time that anybody noticed what we were doing,” Michelle Obama told NBC’s “Today” show at the time. “President Bush and I, we are forever seatmates because of protocol, that’s how we sit at all the official functions, so he is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the formers gather. So we’re together all the time, and I love him to death. He’s a wonderful man. He’s a funny man.”
The Obamas and the Bushes have kept up a cordial friendship since Barack Obama took office in 2009. Michelle Obama announced she cancelled part of her book tour to attend the funeral of George H.W. Bush. Barack Obama released a statement this week eulogizing the late president.
“George H.W. Bush’s life is a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling. And he did tremendous good along the journey,” he wrote. “It’s a legacy of service that may never be matched, even though he’d want all of us to try.”
