South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg called out Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday for perceived hypocrisy between Pence’s personal views and his decision to work for President Donald Trump.

Buttigieg appeared in a CNN Town Hall with Jake Tapper at South By Southwest to address his potential presidential candidacy and his political views on a number of 2020 topics.

“How could he allow himself to become the cheerleader of the porn star presidency?” Buttigieg asked of Pence. “Is it that he stopped believing in scripture when he started believing in Donald Trump.”

This statement came after Tapper asked Buttigieg if having Pence in the Oval Office would be better than Trump.

Buttigieg stood in silence for a few seconds, hesitating to answer the question as laughter started to arise from the audience. He then rebutted Tapper, asking, “Does it have to be between those two?”

Tapper reminded the presidential hopeful that politics is “all about choices,” prompting Buttigieg to elaborate on his answer.

“I mean, I don’t know it’s really strange because I used at least to believe that he believed in our — I disagreed with him ferociously on these things — but I thought, ‘Well at least he believes in our institutions and he’s not personally corrupt,'” replied Buttigieg.

“But then, but then how could he get on board with this presidency,” he continued. “His interpretation of scripture is pretty different from mine, to begin with.”

Buttigieg continued by contrasting his views of the gospel against what he believes Pence’s views are:

“My understanding of scripture is that it is protecting the stranger, and the prisoner, and the poor person and that idea of welcome, that’s what I get in the gospel when I’m in church — and his has a lot more to do with sexuality and I don’t know a certain view of rectitude.”

The South Bend mayor has not been shy in his criticism of the vice president. In an interview last month, Buttigieg said that Pence “embarrassed our state” during his time as governor of Indiana.
