The sentencing hearing brought a grim final chapter to one of the most disturbing child murder cases in recent California history, as a Los Angeles County judge handed down multiple life sentences to two parents convicted of killing their own children.

According to Fox News, Maurice Jewel Taylor Sr., 39, and Natalie Sumiko Brothwell, 49, were sentenced Monday after a jury found them guilty last November of murdering their 13-year-old daughter, Maliaka, and 12-year-old son, Maurice, inside the family’s Lancaster home.

Prosecutors said the couple fatally stabbed both children on Nov. 29, 2020, then decapitated them. After the killings, Taylor and Brothwell forced their two younger sons — who were 8 and 9 years old at the time — to look at their siblings’ bodies.

Authorities said the surviving children were then confined to their bedrooms for several days without food.

The bodies of Maliaka and Maurice were not discovered until five days later, when firefighters responded to the home after receiving a call about a possible gas leak, according to KTTV.

Once inside, first responders found the remains of the two children, prompting a homicide investigation that quickly focused on the parents.

In November, a jury convicted Taylor and Brothwell of two felony counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. On Monday, officials with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the pair received the maximum punishment allowed under state law.

Both parents were sentenced to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, along with an additional six years in state prison, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Should the maximum life sentences for the parents be upheld due to the nature of their crimes?

The court also issued a 10-year protective order for the two surviving children, who were removed from the home following the killings, KTLA reported.

Following the sentencing, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman condemned the murders in a written statement.

“Two innocent children were brutally murdered, and their young brothers were left to live through unimaginable horror,” Hochman wrote.

He described the crime as a “monstrous act of cruelty,” emphasizing the lasting trauma inflicted on the surviving children.

Lancaster, where the killings occurred, is located roughly 70 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

The case has drawn renewed attention to the extreme violence involved and the suffering endured by the surviving children, as prosecutors said the parents showed no mercy in carrying out the killings inside what should have been a place of safety.

With the sentencing complete, Taylor and Brothwell will spend the rest of their lives behind bars, bringing a measure of legal closure to a case that shocked Southern California and left a community grappling with the unimaginable.
