As IJR Blue reported, Pelosi claimed that President Donald Trump has been “goading” Democrats into impeaching him, though she believes it would be a bad idea for Democrats to play to those urges. She claimed that Trump knows that she sees impeachment as divisive and bad for the country — and her party politically.
She has maintained that committee chairs in the House should continue with their investigations into the Mueller report and Trump’s taxes but that impeachment should be left on the back burner. However, as IJR Red reported, she claimed that the process of impeaching is actually about “patriotism,” not politics. She claimed Democrats are only looking for the “truth.”
During an interview on MSNBC with host Kasie Hunt, Cicilline echoed Pelosi and claimed that Democrats in Congress are just “representatives trying to follow the facts and get the truth.” He also claimed that “political reasons” shouldn’t stop them from impeaching Trump.
Watch the video below:
“Well, I heard the speaker say that (Trump was goading them toward impeachment). Look, I think the speaker has also said, and I agree very strongly with this, we should never proceed with impeachment for political reasons. We should never refuse to proceed with impeachment for political reasons. We have to follow the evidence and the facts. We’re still in the evidence-collecting mode. So I think we’re going to make judgments where they’re based on the evidence we see.”
While Cicilline doesn’t seem too worried about the political fallout from impeaching Trump, polling data doesn’t look good for their cause. According to a poll from NBC News, only 19 percent of independent voters believe Congress should impeach Trump.
Although Cicilline took a calculated approach to his comments on impeachment, fellow Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) revealed a much more bold position and claimed that Democrats shouldn’t have even waited until the Mueller report was released before they started impeachment, as IJR Red previously reported.
