Dem Makes ‘Shameful’ Comparison Between Trump and Burning Notre Dame, Claims He’s ‘Torching’ Rule of Law

While the nearly 900-year-old cathedral was still burning, Congressman Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) seized the opportunity to compare the presidency of Donald Trump to the heartbreaking fire at Notre Dame cathedral.

During an interview with MSNBC Monday night, Cohen said that the president was as destructive to the United States Constitution and the rule of law as the destructive fire that was still burning at one of the holiest sights in Europe.

The congressman claimed that Trump’s alleged obstruction of justice — which Special counsel Robert Mueller declined to press charges on — was proof of the president’s “torching” of the rule of law and grounds for impeachment.

The Washington Free Beacon’s Cameron Cawthorne pulled the clip, calling the comments from Cohen “shameful.”

“I think there’s a case for obstruction. There’s a case for a emoluments violation. I filed articles [of impeachment] last year. I haven’t brought them up this year but we’re getting so far along in seeing what this president’s done and what he’s done to the Constitution, the people’s respect for our government. What he’s done to the Constitution and the rule of law is as bad as that fire did to Notre Dame. He’s torching the entire structure of government and the people’s respect for it …”

Cohen claimed that “Congress needs to act” to stop President Trump.

As Cawthorne noted, this is typical behavior for Cohen. As IJR previously reported, the Congressman once claimed that disgraced FBI agent Peter Strzok deserved a “purple heart” for his service. Some of his other comments also led some to believe he was calling for a military coup of Trump, a claim he later denied.

While many Catholics around the world mourned the destruction of one of their holy sights, Cohen showed no regret for his comment, even liking Cawthorne’s tweet of the MSNBC clip.

Cohen has been in Congress since 2007, representing most of Memphis, Tennessee.
