As IJR previously reported, Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have been trying to reel in their fellow Democrats as the calls for impeachment continue to grow following the release of the report from special counsel Robert Mueller.
Many Democrats believe that Trump obstructed justice and is worthy of impeachment. While big-name Democrats are on board the impeachment train, the rest of the country isn’t sold. A recent poll from Fox News found that a majority of Americans want Democrats to get over impeachment and focus on other issues, as IJR previously reported.
This leaves Pelosi with a mess on her hands as she tries to please impeachment-hungry Democrats while understanding the political ramifications of moving forward against the will of voters.
She’s maintained that the House is going to continue its investigations in lieu of impeachment because the issue is so divisive.
During an interview on Fox News, Collins claimed that Pelosi is causing just as much division by smearing Trump as she would be by moving forward with impeachment.
Watch Collins’ interview:
“I thought it was really interesting, you had the clip on earlier about Speaker Pelosi saying that impeachment will be divisive. Well, let me ask you a question: Is it more divisive to do impeachment, which many of their members want to do, or to continually every day smear a president who is doing a good job and every day bring it up in the press and bring it up with their cohorts to say this president is a bad person? This person has done wrong. That’s more divisive to me, to this country. I think she needs to think about that.”
If any impeachment proceedings move forward, it would start in the House Judiciary Committee, in which Collins serves as ranking member.
