FBI Director James Comey Believes Russia Will Attempt to Affect Future Elections

During his testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, FBI Director James Comey said he believes that foreign agents, particularly Russian agents, will try to affect the outcome of future U.S. elections.

Senator Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) asked Comey, “Do you think it is likely that in 2018 and beyond you’re going to see more targeting of U.S. public discourse and elections?” Comey answered, “I do,” and continued:

“I think that one of the lessons that the Russians may have drawn from this is that this works, and so as I said last month or so ago, I expect to see them back in 2018, especially in 2020.”

Sasse continued his questions by asking Comey what the U.S. is doing in regard to cyber security to prepare for these foreign attempts to affect the elections in 2018 and 2020.

Comey said that there is currently a part of the FBI that focuses on stopping exactly these types of threats. However, if Congress did chose to allocate more money to the FBI to combat these attacks, Comey said he would work to upgrade our existing infrastructure as well as hire additional agents and analysts.
