The United Nations Security Council voted Monday evening to approve President Donald Trumpâs peace plan for Gaza, a major diplomatic victory providing an international mandate to rebuild the Gaza Strip following two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The vote â from which two of the bodyâs five permanent members, Russia and China, abstained â of 13â0 in favor of the resolution represents a breakthrough in global affairs as the raging war left Israel largely isolated and under heavy criticism from the international community over claims of genocide, brutality, and other war crimes. Under the Trump administration, however, the United States provided Israel, a key ally in the Middle East, with strong defensive and political support.
The resolution endorsing Trumpâs âComprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflictâ notably drew the support of regional powers including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, as well as Indonesia, Turkey, and Pakistan, another member of the Security Council.
Trump announced the peace deal Sept. 29, before gathering with dozens of other world leaders in Egypt for its Oct. 9 signing.

The newly adopted resolution calls for an International Stabilization Force to enter, demilitarize, and oversee the Gaza Strip. Governance of the devastated region would be implemented according to Trumpâs 20-point peace plan, which includes a âBoard of Peaceâ he will reportedly head along with presently undetermined partner nations.
The planâs first phase established a delicate ceasefire, the release of the remaining living and deceased hostages, a limited withdrawal of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from Gaza City, and increased humanitarian aid.
The second phase focuses on the disarming of Hamas as the IDF continues to reposition outside a buffer zone surrounding Gaza City. The plan projects a 20,000-troop enforcement force by participating nations â including those with Muslim majorities such as Indonesia and Azerbaijan â by 2026.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz previewed the resolution as a âlifelineâ for Gaza, which he referenced as âhell on earth.â He then praised the Councilâs subsequent passage of the resolution as a âsignificant step towards a stable Gaza that will be able to prosper, and an environment that will allow Israel to live in security.â
The Board of Peace, he highlighted, would âcoordinate the delivery of humanitarian assistance, facilitate Gazaâs development, and support a technocratic committee of Palestinians responsible for day-to-day operations of Gazaâs civil service and administration while the Palestinian Authority fully implements its reform program.â
As the only Arab member of the Council, Algeriaâs ambassador to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, thanked Trump for his efforts to bring peace to the region, but continued to advocate for the Palestinian people to be considered as the proposal is implemented.
âGenuine peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without justice, justice for the Palestinian people, who have waited for decades for the creation of their independent state,â he said.
Walz reiterated the role of the United States as the Gaza conflict passed the dayâs diplomatic milestone. âWe look forward to working alongside the World Bank to that end, as it supports Gazaâs long-term redevelopment even as we address the immediate and dire humanitarian needs.â
